Renewable energy from biomass and waste
Emissions to Air
Advanced thermal treatment activities are subject to the Waste Incineration Directive through environmental permits or pollution prevention and control (PPC) permits issued for activities listed under Part A. The Environmental Permitting Regulations (EPR) were introduced in 2008 in England and Wales to combine the Pollution Prevention Control (PPC) and Waste Management Licensing (WML) regulations into a single regulatory framework but in Scotland, the PPC permitting system is still in place.
The discharged exhaust gases are treated in a remediation system to achieve compliance with the requirements of the European Community Waste Incineration Directive emission levels as defined below. Experience suggests that the technology will be able to routinely achieve emission levels far below those stated below and significantly better than those of conventional treatment technologies.
